Blood Cell Profile of the Tadpoles of Chirixalus simus (Anura: Rhacophoridae) During Development and Metamorphosis

Abstract


The present paper describes the blood cell profile in the tadpoles of Chirixalus simus during their development and metamorphosis. Blood smears of 21 different stages i.e. from hindlimb bud stage tadpoles to metamorphosed froglets were investigated. A sequential study of the changes in morphometry and morphology of erythrocytes and leukocyte profiles was investigated. Erythrocytes showed a heterogeneous morphology, represented by various forms (oval, elliptical or rounded cells, comma shaped, teardrop shaped and crenulated). Leukocytes profile showed the lymphocytes to be most abundant cells followed by neutrophils. The percentage of lymphocytes and neutrophils showed a negative whereas percentage of eosinophil, basophil and monocytes showed a positive correlation with developmental stages of tadpoles.
