«Same-Same but Different»: Another New Species of the Limnonectes kuhlii Complex from Thailand (Anura: Dicroglossidae)

Abstract


A new species of anuran of the dicroglossine genus Limnonectes from Loei Province, Thailand, is described. Analysis of DNA sequence data from the mitochondrial 12S and 16S rRNA gene regions places the species within the Limnonectes kuhlii complex and demonstrates it to be the sister taxon of Limnonectes megastomias and Limnonectes taylori, two species recently described based on specimens from Thailand. Both molecular and morphological data support the recognition of this lineage. A combination of morphological characters distinguishes the new species, Limnonectes isanensis sp. nov. from all other closely related and geographically proximate members of the L. kuhlii complex. Additionally, genetic distances between the new species and its closest relatives are similar to those among other species of the L. kuhlii complex.
