Inter-Populational Differences in Activity of Acid Phosphatase in the Tails of the Tadpoles of Duttaphrynus melanostictus (Anura: Bufonidae)

Abstract

Intraspecific variation in larval period as well as rate of tail regression was investigated in two populations of Duttaphrynus melanostictus. Lysosomal enzymes are actively involved in the degradation of tail tissues during metamorphosis and specific activity of the marker lysosomal enzyme acid phosphatase shows different trends during the climactic stages to cause inter-populational variations in the duration of tail regression. The variation in specific activity of acid phosphatase seems to be a physiological adaptation enabling the two different populations of a species to complete their larval period as per specific climatic conditions.
